Finally ! The Ushuaia – Tierra del Fuego. The most southermost city in the world (permanantly habitated).

If i can be honest – i´ve expected something smaller and more more ´regional´. A few fisherman houses, some specialized agencies in travels to the Antartica. And what we found here is huge port for the containers – Maersk rulez. Ushuaia is a quite a big city with huge turistic business – expensive hotels, shops, exclusive places and expensive dishes. Something like Polish Zakopane or Sopot during the high season. However here the season shoud soon begin…

What is an interesting subject which is probably important here and noticeable is Islands Malvines/Falklands. In Argentina the Malvines Islands are always on the map showed as current Argentinian territory. What´s more going to the Ushuaia when entering the Grand Island of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago we saw a big billboard that Malvines are the Argentinian property. In the city itself i found a huge monument for the soldiers who were killed during the war for islands in 80´s, and a few posters and bronze plate explaining Malvinas issue. But according to my knowledge it´s a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom (status after the WWII and after the Malvines/Falklands conflict). I´ve found in Punta Arenas very interesting book about the Tierra del Fuego and Falklands islands which i scanned very quickly and i must say that problem who should own the islands is very complicated… really interesting subject… i will look for another sign of that here…

Tomorrow we´ll have a full day to spend here, and the day after tomorrow we start our trip to the North of South America. We have tickets for the Punta Arenas (Chile – Sth America Continent), then we take a bus to Puerto Montt (Chile, near Chiloe island) and after that we will look for direct bus to the Santiago (Chile) our final destination and departure city to fly to Europe.

W are here: Ushuaia
