Saturday walk in Wrzeszcz

Last Saturday while in Gdańsk I packed into my backpack two cameras – one traditional Voigtlander Vitomatic loaded with Color film, and digital EOS 50D with EF 17-55 and additionally small EF 28mm just in case to jacket pocket. I hoped to take some photos during the daylight with traditional Voigtlander loaded with ISO200 film. I still feel not confident enough to shoot film after dusk and in the evening – that’s why I went armed with digital equipment, where I can set a high ISO without problems – usually usually usable ISO on 50D is ISO2000-3200(MAX acceptable), while on 350D maximum acceptable is ISO800 but I usually set it to ISO1600 which is maximum setting but then I had to set it also to the B&W – because the grain is really not acceptable in color.

Well I especially like this 28mm lens while shooting on the street. This lens is very small and additional rubber hood when extracted makes it protected against weather conditions – especially rain and the snow doesn’t fall on the front lens, and there is no need to clean it every few minutes. It’s a really good patent – I practiced it during South America trip – in Patagonia when visiting Perito Moreno Glacier. The weather was horrible, windy with heavy rain. I borrowed the plastic bag, put camera and my hand inside the bag. Then I made a small hole for the lens (EF 28mm) with the extracted rubber hood attached (hood have three positions – fully extracted it has about 4-5cm, and still there is no vignetting on the photos. The bag protected camera from the rain, and I still was able to press the shutter with my right hand inside the bag. Rubber hood protected from drops falling on the front lens, that way I had photos without dots. The only problem was the photo preview on the rear lcd, but when the plastic bag was pressed to the screen I was able to see something. The only thing I was afraid of was humidity that might harm the camera, because Canon 350d doesn’t have environmental sealing. For example that photo was taken during such conditions : Perito Moreno Glacier.

That was a small off-topic description, anyway that saturday I wandered a little around Wrzeszcz district, where there’s a lot of interesting places worth registering on the photos. I took a few test photos with Voigtlander – it’s the first roll in that camera, and when it became to dark for the ISO200, I changed to digital. I had to say that I took a few nice shots during that walk (IMO), however probably not-so-interesting for others as there is not many people – it’s not a real street photos, or better saying unmanned-street photos :)

During that walk, i took photos which might be connected to different categories – landscape/architecture, basketball basket in different places (new project), street, night (long exposure), registering places for archives (new buildings and investment planned), and others… So I really should divide this post into parts. Well, for now a few almost randomly choosen from that trip you can see below…

First:”the basketball basket in different places all around the world” project. Saperów street – Gdańsk Wrzeszcz.

Some photos from the Park Kuźniczki – near the old Gdańsk Brewery at the Kilińskiego street. Unfortunately they plan to build here some high buildings. I hope that park will stay where it is now.

Last three photos below. First two were taken at the Gdańsk Wrzeszcz station buiding which looks really ugly and it’s dirty and not nice. the building from the PRL times – just the simple brick is awful and really doesn’t fit to that nice district. I wonder how that train station looked eg. before the World Wars.

First the bike parked in front of the station building. Second – entrance to the building and later on to the underground passage to the platforms.

Last 3rd photo was taken from the nearest bridge close to the station – View towards the station and the platform.
