The sunny sunday was a great day for a small walk — with camera of course. This time we’ve headed towards the districts Brzeźno and Nowy Port of Gdańsk. Somehow we’ve landed in Nowy Port district – at the Passenger part of the Port. Except the terminal there is also harbour master’s office and the wonderful XIX century lighthouse (1894r) which is almost exact copy of the Lighthouse in the US in Cleveleand (more about the lighthouse itself on the translated polish wiki pages here).
The lighthouse is interesting mostly because of the two reasons: the Time Ball which is a large metal ball that drops at a predetermined time, to enable sailors to check their marine chronometers from their boats offshore, and the second: from this lighthouse on the morning 1 of October of 1939 the shots from the lighthouse’s window Germans gave the sign to attack Westerplatte to the marines on the Schleswig-Holstein. So in fact the shots from that lighthouse and then from the Schleswig-Holstein started the WWII.
Next photos were taken in Nowy Port district. I have more intersting ones, those ones were selected randomly as quite interesting ones. First is the photo of the ferry across the Vistula river – the easiest way to get to the Wisłoujście fortifications, as well the Westerplatte. The ferry of course is called “Wisłoujście” (The mouth of the Vistula river)
The second photo is taken at the entrance to the New Port Tram Depot. The electric lines are almost everywhere… with that photo you can start to feel the athmosphere of the New Port district…
