Gdańsk Dockyard workers’ tenements [HDR]. It was a sunny September day, with the sun warm and low… really great for the taking photos. That time we’ve decided to find out a fine place connected somehow to the Gdańsk Shipyard. So we found the Robotnicza Street which ends with dead end, and is adjacent to the shipyard wall. Photos from that area you can see below. Especially the architecture and the material – red brick – of those tenements make the special atmosphere there. Also the knowledge that those buildings were mostly inhabited by the shipyard workers and theirs families influences the imagination. Nowadays when the shipyard situation is very difficult, probably it’s not like it was about 10 years ago during the great changes – less shipyard workers occupy those flats. However that street still looks like some kind of enclave inhabited but not-so-wealthy citizens of Gdańsk.
Photos were taken late afternoon with shadows getting longer and longer, so some of the photos look very flat. To punch the colors and to build up the atmosphere I’ve decided to develop some of them as pseudo-HDR photos (HDR photo is made from single RAW file). Result you can see below… First part: Tenements of the Robotnicza Street, with view at the Shipyard Cranes.
Second part of photos: Main entrance to the shipyard (Stocznia Gdańska), and old very common during the communism times – Militia Car ‘STAR’ (MILICJA). It was used mostly to transport people detained during protests, or other versions were used to transport the Intervention Militia Squad. I’m not sure which one is it. Windows rather indicate that it was Militia version. Characteristic was that white stripe around the car which here is painted over with dark blue. Also the MILICJA inscription is painted over.
