52st International Book Fair – PKiN

Recently I visited the International Book Fair in the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. It was a really nice event where i could play with the different e-book readers, find many interesting books of different publishers – and as every year I visited the stand of the company which is distributor of National Geographic magazine (English version as well as and other languages) and many different photo magazines. I bought all photo magazines they had there (“Color” and “B&W” and “B&W Special edition”) mostly because they costed 1/5th of the price in the bookstores where the price is much higher than nominal one written on the magazine…

Of course while wandering the corridors of the PKiN i had camera ready in my hand, hoping to take some fine shots.

I was really happy to find there stands or a small gallery of the drawings of famous Polish graphic artist – Bohdan Butenko. I remember him from my childhood – he was able with his works to be well remembered during the PRL times (communism times), mostly because of characteristic humour, special understated lines and nice characters like Gapiszon or Kwapiszon. He was an author of comics series – “Kwapiszon and…” – i remember him from that the most. He also made a lot of illustrations to many different books. I had to take some shots to share it and show you his works (Mr Bohdan Butenko please forgive me for the copying your works in some way – it’s just to show appreciation to your work – and of course I have and will have the originals ).

Take a look : On the first photos there is his first successful character – Gapiszon:

And here are my first comics of Kwapiszon. Firsts parts were from 1977… they as old as me… First comics has a title: “The Very Wet Adventure” and the second “Kwapiszon and the mysterious chest”.

Here you can see the illustrations for the childrens’ poems written by Jan Brzechwa – this one for the poem entitled “Androny”. You can see also reflections of ours’ figures at the picture’s glass.

That first photo is interesting – it’s subject was quite common during the communism times. That drawing was something between the warning or some kind a lesson for the people of that times – written in the humorous way… First one: “half of the horses run away from the engine when it will not have adequate compression pressure…”; Second: “Check the fuel supply if the carburetor starts to sneeze and the engine starts to become lazy.”

Finally some shots of the most important things on the Book Fair – The books. At the old books section you could find even ‘Mein Kampf’ or the ‘Brazylja’ – old book about Brazil – that one I would like to have in my collection…
